Question 9: Who Wants to be an Internet Nerd!
What is the first video on YouTube to reach over 1 billion views?
- The Trololo Guy
- Gangnam Style
- Call Me Maybe
- Baby Shark
ANSWER
Gangnam Style (CORRECT) In December 2012, “Gangnam Style” became the first video ever to hit 1 billion views on YouTube – just over 150 days after its debut in July 2012. To date, Gangham Syle has 5,187,137,380 views on YouTube and who knows how many wedding celebration videos have captured guests mimicking the catchy dance style.
The Trololo Guy (WRONG). Whereas this little ditty caught many by surprise and made us smile (is this real?) it never got close to a billion views. The 1976 video of Russian singer Eduard Khil singing “I Am So Glad I’m Finally Returning Back Home” was posted on YouTube in 2009 and generated over 18 Million views. One of the video comments noted, “It’s hard to describe the way the internet used to be. You just kind of had to be there. But this song is a great example.”
Baby Shark (WRONG) . Baby Shark has generated over 14 billion views worldwide but it was not the first video to obtain 1 billion views. Probably because is wasn’t posted on YouTube until June 17, 2016 almost 4 years after Gangnam Style. But, we have to believe in a head-to-head competition, Baby Shark would swim circles around South Korean singer Psy’s.
Call Me Maybe. (WRONG) Sorry Carly “1.6 billion Maybe” but that includes all views to date (12 years after Gangham Style hit the billion milestone).
